Job Summary

The Lab Technician works as a part of the Quality Unit to document the shipping and receiving of lab instruments, equipment and chemicals, safely remove laboratory waste and cleaning of laboratory glassware.

Job Responsibilities

  • Document shipping and receiving of lab instruments, equipment and chemicals to and from the Analytical Operations/QC department and to consult with the Supervisor or designate to assign correct labelling and storage locations.
  • Support the ordering of the following items as necessary, to maintain suitable stock levels of chemicals, solvents, equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain an up-to-date electronic and physical inventory of all chemicals/solvents and lab ware in the department is maintained by performing tasks required to add or remove items from the department’s physical inventory of chemicals.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization and safety of the department’s standard, chemical storage and lab ware rooms by ensuring that obstructions are not impeding staff from retrieving required chemicals and/or lab ware, monitoring the condition of the storage rooms and performing waste disposal of expired material as required/instructed.
  • Performs the removal of empty containers/bottles from the laboratory as required. Disposes of lab liquid (non-chlorinated/chlorinated) and solid (chemical/glass) waste on a daily basis.  
  • Performs the washing, drying and storing of lab glassware and utilizes the lab dishwasher. Ensures clean glassware availability is maximized.
  • Safely remove hazardous laboratory waste as per approved procedures and in a timely manner.
  • Execute Performance Qualifications (PQ) on selected lab instruments (example: pH meters, scales, Karl Fischer unit, thermometers). Report to the supervisor any defective/failing equipment and assist in the repair if required.
  • Maintain the updated master record of Service Requests submitted by Analytical Operations/QC and RD staff covering the instrumentation and equipment employed within the department. Keep records on repair history of instruments and equipment.
  • Responsible for the completion of annual physical inventory of the department’s chemical/lab ware inventory against the electronic inventory.
  • To provide back-up support in other areas as requested by the Supervisor. Perform daily calibrations of analytical instruments if required.
  • To participate in Quality Control objectives where certified, such as sampling of quarantined material, and/or routine (basic) chemical analysis under the guidance of a senior chemist.
  • Ensure all results and documentation is of high quality, generated in a timely manner, and comply with GMPs.
  • Develop a proficiency with selected lab instruments, example pH meter, KF, scales, dishwater, glovebox and water circulators
  • Keep the laboratory, instruments, and glassware clean.
  • Works in a safe manner collaborating as a team member to achieve all outcomes.

Job Requirements

  • Education
    • Chemical Technician College diploma (minimum 2 years) or related scientific field, or
    • High school diploma (chemistry courses required) with 3 years of industrial or laboratory experience
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Demonstrated ability with Microsoft Word, and Excel.
    • Familiarity with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
    • Good communication and writing skills (neat and concise) are required.
    • Ability to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
    • Must be physically able to periodically lift up to 20 Kg.
    • Must be able to work independently or as part of a team.
    • Acquainted with organic chemistry nomenclature and chemistry lab instrumentation.
    • Participate in a shift rotation and/or on-call if required.
    • Shipping and receiving experience would be an asset
  • Experience
    • 3 years of industrial or laboratory experience (if no diploma in related field)

The hiring range for this position is $42,850 - $71,416 CAD per year. The final agreed-upon salary may vary based on factors such as job-related knowledge, skills and experience.
