Job Summary

The Manager, Regional Traffic & Customs Operations is responsible directly or indirectly for all Transportation and Logistics related functions for the assigned origin operations that include all forms of Freight and Transportation; Freight Forwarding; Customs Clearance supporting Operations, Customers, CMOs, and CPOs. This role will establish a strong collaboration with Global External Operations (GEO), ARPL, Global Traffic & Customs Operations, CMOs, CPOs, Logistics Providers, Customers and other internal stakeholders.

This role will provide direction regarding the movement of goods and materials originating from India, China and Europe in the most efficient and cost-effective manner as per the department and corporate strategic direction and plan, ensuring the delivery of quality product to the customer. 

This role is responsible for ensuring alignment to ensure all established customer service targets are being met or exceeded. Acts as a key resource regionally and as a subject matter expert on traffic and customs processes and shipment requirements to plan, coordinating and preparing all required logistical and regulatory documentation related to the movement of freight for the assigned origin operations.

Job Responsibilities

  • Liaise with Global External Operations (GEO), ARPL, Global Traffic & Customs, CMOs, and Freight Forwarder for the planning and execution of fullloads, utilizing established, validated Freight forwarder Consolidation Facilities in India. Report on cost savings and missed opportunities
  • Manage Regional Freight Forwarder performance and relationship.
  • Responsible for the planning, execution, managing and monitoring of temperature sensitive shipments to ensure product quality, safety and regulatory compliance throughout the transportation process for CMO shipments from origin to destination
  • Understand Commercial and New Product launch activities for new product launches from CMOs. Collaborate with Launch personnel to execute transportation requirements
  • Execute inbound/outbound process to ensure compliance with international and customs rules and regulations
  • Participate in the development of long term planning to support corporate goals, investigate new technologies, recommend process improvement opportunities and propose more cost-effective transportation lanes and methods to enhance customer service and reduce costs
  • Provide regional transportation updates and KPIs, including cost savings/cost avoidance status, carrier performance, areas for continuous improvement, actionable insights to support strategic decision-making
  • Provide leadership and manage the evaluation of various modes of transportation to support business requirements considering cost, service, and performance, making recommendations to Management for approval when required
  • Collaborate with internal departments/customers and act as a resource to assist in the preparation and coordination of documents and scheduling/status notification of shipments regionally to ensure effective utilization of freight forwarder services in a cost effective and timely manner. Ensure proactive follow up on critical high priority shipments, communicating and providing visibility to internal stakeholders
  • Recommends actions or remedial actions to senior management in cases of non-compliance with international customs and regulatory agencies
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with external stakeholders in order to support the movement of goods in a cost effective manner, including pricing requirements and process improvements
  • Participate in developing, recommending and implementing cross-functional project teams, systems, policies, procedures
  • Act as an SME to provide detailed timelines for regional traffic investigations to internal stakeholders. Collaborate with Transportation provider on regional investigations
  • Ensure that all shipments are complete with required documentation and oversee the entire shipment process utilizing internal/external systems
  • Responds to complex or unconventional queries regarding regional Traffic and Customs issues
  • Performs all work in accordance with all established regulatory and compliance and safety requirements

Job Requirements

  • Education
    • University degree in Business, Science, Supply Chain/Operations or related field including engineering or health sciences.
    • MBA and/ or PMP certification considered an asset.
    • Recognized designation (FITT, ASCM, CITT, P. Log) and/or Lean Six Sigma certification or training considered an asset.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Excellent knowledge of INCO terms, AMPs, TDG by Ground and Air, FDA and DEA terms and requirements
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including clear, succinct and timely communication and proven ability to foster positive relations with customers and key stakeholders, suitable for senior level interaction both within the company and with 3rd party providers
    • Superior written and oral communication skills including ability to storyboard and succinctly articulate complex ideas, proposals and recommendations
    • Flexibility to work during different time zones
    • Demonstrated interpersonal savvy and relationship management/networking skills
    • Strong ability to deal with ambiguity and manage through difficult situations and deadlines
    • Strong working knowledge of enterprise systems (e.g. SAP, MSP, EPM), organizational business processes, supply chain practices, and applicable software skills
    • Ability to work in a matrix organization that is fast-paced and is continuously changing.
    • Proven experience holding cross-functional members accountable and facilitating the decision-making process.
    • Demonstrated ability to champion change and drive improvements.
    • Must be detail oriented, have working knowledge and be accurate when processing shipping documentation.
    • Demonstrated experience leading teams in either a direct or indirect (influencing) role where coaching, mentoring, performance management advice/direction and overall development of talent has been achieved.
    • Computer literacy with MS Office suite of tools.
  • Experience
    • Minimum of 10-15 years in a Freight Forwarding, Logistics, Customs or Supply Chain environment; pharmaceutical industry experience preferred.
    • Good understanding of Business processes and regulations in the pharmaceutical industry desired.
