Job Summary

The Chemist I, Research and Technology position in the R&T group is responsible for supporting the R&T activies at Apotex Pharmachem, in particular in the areas of process analytical technology, analytical method development, introduction of new analytical and separation technologies and analytical services. This position also supports other efforts within the R&T group when necessary such as polymorph troubleshooting and form development.

Job Responsibilities

  • Researches and develops safe, commercially competitive laboratory procedures for fine chemical and pharmaceutical actives production.
  • Method development for the analysis and, if needed, isolation of impurities on assigned projects using preparative HPLC, HPLC, GC, and other routine analytical tools.
  • Implement and use innovative technologies, such as continuous flow chemistry, in the area of organic synthesis and pharmaceutical manufacturing.
  • Implement and use innovative technologies, such as high throughput screening (HTS), PXRD (D8), Intrinsic dissolution testing (IDR), DSC, TGA, and IR in the area of polymorphic form strategy development.
  • Provide update to management on method development activities including problems, deviations, issues related to products, instruments /analysis methods /specification.
  • Ensures proper documentation of analytical data and information.
  • Remains abreast of all prior and new literature relating to assigned projects and technologies, and to provide recommendations/evaluations on all assigned projects.
  • Develops an appreciation for the principles of cGMP and to conform with all relevant departmental and other company standard operating procedures.
  • Completes all reports and documentation associated with assigned projects as directed.
  • Acts as a member of the technology transfer team on scale-up implementation, and to supply information and/or perform laboratory experiments associated with this work as required.
  • Supervises R&T associates on assigned projects as directed by the Supervisor or
  • Executes problem solving on assigned projects.
  • Meets all deadlines associated with projects as directed
  • Keeps the Supervisor and R&T Management up-to-date on progress of the assigned projects.
  • Ensures continuous professional development by regular literature review.
  • Works in a safe manner collaborating as a team member to achieve all outcomes.

Job Requirements

  1. Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry from a recognized academic institution or M.Sc. Degree with a minimum two years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or fine chemicals industry or B.Sc. degree with a minimum five years of relevant experience in pharmaceutical or fine chemicals industry.
  2. Proven track record in conducting scientific research.
  3. The ability to work independently or as a member of a team.
  4. The willingness to upgrade knowledge/education as required.
