Job Summary

As a member of the Site Leadership Team, the Associate Director, People & Performance partners with the business to support the successful achievement of business goals through the effective delivery of HR policies and programs across the assigned Site, including Apotex Values and Winning Behavours and Global Business Ethics & Compliance.  This role is also responsible for effectively leading a team of HR Partners, People and Performance and partnering with corporate HR Centres of Expertise (CoEs) in the design, implementation and maintenance of HR programs in support of the Business and HR Strategy.

Job Responsibilities

Business Partnering

  • As a trusted HR Leader and member of the assigned Site Leadership Team, translate business strategy and operational plans into people/talent initiatives to ensure the overall successful performance of the respective business area.
  • Engage and collaborate with the HR CoEs to provide insights on program development and improvements to existing processes or programs. Leverage the tools and processes developed by HR CoEs, and assures appropriate analytics to support delivery of HR programs.
  • Represent the needs of the Site in various HR planning and policy forums and develop solutions that meet business needs and have Corporate HR support.
  • Stay informed of employee opinions, monitor the effect of business decisions on people, advise and make recommendations to Site Leadership and/or Corporate HR on possible solutions.
  • In support of business strategies, work closely with sponsors of change and facilitate communication to management and employees regarding organizational change and change management, including technology improvements and new programs.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives by partnering with leaders and employees on key programs such as Transcend.


  • Manage, guide and direct HR Partners, People & Performance in the proactive management and resolution of employee relations and other HR issues.
  • Coach and mentor Leaders and Employees with a particular focus on identifying, assessing and development in support of Talent Management.
  • Support, guide, and advise Management in its employee relations role by assisting in the development of division/department/employee communication plans/programs.
  • Recruit, train, develop and manage effectively the ongoing performance of direct reports, which includes, but is not limited to:
    • Ensuring Job Descriptions are reviewed, signed and stored,
    • Reviewing and updating Development Plans, ensuring that all employees are properly trained and qualified to execute their duties,
    • Providing coaching, feedback and recognition,
    • Responsible to ensure compliance with Safety and Employment policies (e.g. Respect in the Workplace – Prevention of Violence and/or Harassment).

Core HR Services

  • As a member of the Extended HRLT, commit to collaborate effectively towards the HR4HR and fiscal year HR Operational priorities.
  • Understand the core HR processes, including but not limited to: talent acquisition, performance management, reward and recognition, change management, communication, and aligned and engaged initiatives; and, in conjunction with the HR CoEs and Site Leadership, implement, monitor and evaluate their effectiveness.
  • Lead Employee Committee activities at assigned Site. Act as a resource and advisor to Committee Members.
  • Effectively manage the Compatibility Process, including the final termination, either directly or through the HR Partner, People & Performance.
  • Champion employee advocacy and the corporate philosophy of treating all with dignity and respect.
  • Participate in the selection process and orientation of leaders within assigned Site.
  • Work with the HR CoEs, HR Directors, HR Managers and other HR staff to ensure policies and programs are aligned, integrated and in keeping with positive employee relations practices.

Employee Relations

  • Support the Site with day-to-day employee relations issues that arise and ensure all investigations are conducted in a timely, discrete and professional manner.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements

  • Education
    • University degree in a related field with a preference for relevant HR designation
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Superior communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills.
    • Experience in a variety of settings, including a combination of manufacturing, scientific and office environments.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of Employment Legislation; coaching and counselling; dispute resolution and facilitation skills; principles of change management.
    • Demonstrated ability to work well with a diverse employee population and at all levels within the organization.
    • Proven ability to be productive in a very fast paced, matrix environment.
  • Experience
    • 10-15 years progressive Human Resource experience, including a minimum 5 years in a generalist/employee relations capacity.
