Job Summary
Purpose: This role will report to the Director, Global EHS and will have responsibility for maintaining the global environmental programs. The role will also collaborate with the health and safety functions where consolidated EHS program efforts are required.
Scope: The main responsibility of the Environmental Specialist is to work with the Director, Global EHS to ensure that Apotex Inc. maintains compliance with all regulations related to the environment, supports all sites with environmental initiatives and programs, and supports Apotex ESG related efforts. The specialist will assist in the development of programs and tools to ensure that these obligations are met and will help to build the overall environmental program at Apotex Inc. including employee engagement activities, developing and delivering training, Incident/Accident investigations related to spills and releases and auditing of the overall program.
Job Responsibilities
- Provides technical expertise in the area of environment management and environmental regulatory compliance; providing tactical coaching to managers, other team members and employees as required.
- Monitors, responds to and helps resolves environmental issues as they arise and identifies when issues need to be escalated.
- Stays aware of “leading edge” environmental practices through regular professional development activities and monitoring related legislation.
- Provides technical input into the development and revision of EHS standards, training and identified projects utilizing codes, standards and relevant document sources.
- Supports annual chemical and hazardous materials inventory programs for all identified sites (i.e., GTA) in accordance with global EHS standards and all associated regulatory submissions including NPRI, GHG, TRA, Chemtrec, CWC, etc., in collaboration with the site EHS lead.
- Supports global EHS compliance with regulated programs including waste registration, stewardship programs, surveys, air compliance (ECAs and annual reporting), etc.; supports creation and monitoring of systems to help teach the business to do this independently, in collaboration with the global EHS team.
- Supports waste audits in cooperation with the site EHS leads and impacted groups as well as assists in the review of findings to ensure corrective actions are executed by the site(s).
- Supports the creation and upkeep of the global EHS Compliance Calendar (ongoing) and site EHS self-assessment tools.
- Supports project teams to ensure compliance with company environmental requirements, codes or standards. This includes monitoring the application of the Environmental Considerations form and the preparation of cleaning agent risk assessments.
- Participates in the internal auditing of the EHS program and provides support as required to initiate identified corrective measures.
- Utilizing codes, standards and other relevant document sources, performs research that supports key environmental initiatives.
- Participates in Incident/Accident investigations associated with environmental compliance, track the implementation of resulting recommendations and follow up on corrective actions.
- Takes a lead role in responding to external groups such as regulatory bodies (MECP, by-law officers) and customers.
- Supports site safety committees and other designated employee committees as a resource, as it relates to environmental matters, as required.
- Develops and executes employee engagement activities and communications focussing on Apotex’s environmental programs, in collaboration with the global EHS team and calendar.
- Collaborates with key stakeholders in the development and revision environmental training content and delivers or supports training specific to area of expertise, as required.

Job Requirements
- Education
- University/College degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Studies or related science with applicable experience.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough understanding of the pertinent environmental acts, regulations and associated codes and standards.
- Understanding of globally accepted environmental and sustainability programs, platforms and metrics.
- Familiarity with ISO 14001.
- Knowledgeable in occupational health and safety programs/management systems.
- Proven ability as a team player.
- Excellent organizational / project management skills.
- Strong communication skills (verbal & written).
- Working knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access software package.
- Experience
- 5-7 years relevant experience.
- EP, LEED or similar designations an asset.
